The old, rotten doors as delivered to the wood shop

A friend of mine mentioned a great carpenter out in the boons, about a 40 minute drive from where I live. I got in contact with him and told him about the project. As usual, when confronting an individual not familiar with my project, the man was kind of skeptical at first. I went on telling him about what I needed done: To as accurately as possible rebuild the 100+ years old double doors, keeping them as original looking & feeling as possible, just adding modern, insurance compatible locks and hinges.

Obviously intrigued by the project, the carpenter got to work. We’ve had some phone calls chatting about locks, hinges and stuff like that, but I didn’t know he had actually started working on the doors.

The other day he sent me the first picture of his endeavors so far. Not only has he completely reproduced the outer doors – he has also restored the inner door pair and built a new overhead window.

New but old.

This guy is just f**king unreal. He is true to detail in every aspect, a craftsman of unparalleled skill and capacity, yet so humble and laid back. A true master of his domain. The doors should be ready in about 2-3 weeks, and then we’ll head down to the tower to install them, hopefully before first snow.
