Never knew that “Cultural” or “Heritage” paint could constitute its own industry sector. But man, it does. Traditional, “culturally correct” paint is made the old way and supposedly, looks like it did back then.
According to my building permit, all carpentry items on the tower must be painted in a red color named “English Red”. The concoction is linseed based and you’ll pay through your “#¤%&/() nose for it.
Anyway, besides being period correct the hue in question is very pleasing to the eye. Today I ordered up 2 liters of it – I need it for some of the roof detailing and who knows for what else. Check it out – 1A-48A English Red from Ottosson Färgmakeri. Taken from their site:
“Our linseed oil paint can be applied on any surface. It protects the substrate from weather and wind, the ravages of time and the changing seasons. In Sweden, as in the rest of Europe, there is a long tradition of painting buildings and interiors with linseed oil paint. The reason the paint has survived for 500 years is because it really does provide protection to the substrate on which you are painting. This is great stuff – and we’ll really bend you over for it.”
(I added that last part.)
